Ebay buys Skype for 2.6 billion

Much speculation(some on my part) ended today as the online auction giant Ebay won the bidding for IP telephony service Skype with a 2.6 billion bid. Ebay says that they will be paying half(1.3 billion) in cash and the other half in Ebay stock.

While the addition of [tag]Skype[/tag] to the [tag]Ebay[/tag] roster could allow for Ebay users to easily talk to each other about transactions, I still find it hard to see why the worlds largest online commerce site would want to buy a service that is given away for free. They would face a fairly good mutiny if they were to think about charging users to use Skype services, but I could see them trying a “premium” service at some point. Rest assured tho, Ebay didn’t pay 2.6 billion for Skype if they don’t have some sort of plan as to how and when Skype fits into the Ebay machine.
